This is another kit for the “Animal” Challenge that got done late.

I was given this kit by a good friend Sgt. John H. S. S. Smith.  He and I worked in the Data Maintenance Shop at Pruem Air Station, West Germany in the early 1980s.  John before joining the USAF served on the HMS Ark Royal in the Royal Navy.  He told me many stories about his service and joining the Air Force.  I put the kit away and never started it.

The ship has an interesting history.  It took a very long time to build due to WWII.  The British had other priorities back then.  Here are the details.

Laid down:  October 1, 1941             Launched:  October 25, 1945

Commissioned:  March 18, 1959           Displacement:  12,080 Tons

Dimensions:  Length- 555.5’                Width-64’                  Depth-21’

Fate:  Scrapped October 1986

HMS Tiger was built first as an all gun cruiser.  Later it was converted to a helicopter cruiser.  Many felt this destroyed the graceful lines of this ship.

This is my second 1/700 Matchbox ship model.  This kit has a split hull.  The paint reference is typical Matchbox as the paint reference is Humbrol and multi-lingual.  The paint call outs for each part is good and seems accurate to the ship.  I used the guide to paint the ship.

This is a paint first and assemble later kit.  That is normal for a ship model.  Building is straight forward starting with the basic hull and then 8 steps of building assemblies.  The final two steps are putting the assemblies and parts on the hull.

I built the ship just far enough to be able to decal the hull and helicopter deck.  This way you only have to gloss coat a small amount of the ship.  The decals worked very well despite the age.  The conformed very well with Microscale Micro Sol and Micro Set.

There are a few fit issues with the aft mast to the hull and the helicopter hanger.  Other than that there are no other fit issues.  One problem for me is the boat davits and hanging the boats from the davits.  Glue the davits first and allow the glue to set.  Then, put a touch of glue on the end of the davits and with good tweezers put the boats in place.  This is not my favorite thing to do.  I am getting better.

I see this kit is back.  Revell has released this kit under the Revell name.  It is out now.
